SACA adopts center for kids
By Amanda Baillie
HUACHUCA CITY — After 22 years, the Cochise County Children's Center is showing many signs of old age. But the lack of a maintenance budget has prevented the facility from doing much more than just patching things up.
Thanks to local contractors, however, the center is set to undergo a transformation the makers of “Extreme Makeover” would be proud of. The Southeastern Arizona Contractors Association has agreed to adopt the center as an official project with the long-term goal of remodeling the building from top to bottom.
“I'm just thrilled and very excited,” said Kim Tellez, center's program director. “We have been very lucky with our community.”
The SACA board of directors agreed to take on the project after its vice president, Mike Rutherford, visited the center when one of its advisory members mentioned the facility needed a new roof.
“I came down, met with Kim, looked at the whole area and decided the center needed more than just a roof,” Rutherford said.
Although SACA has helped other organizations in the past, it has never done anything on this scale.
