City officials talk about ‘golden corridor'
for growth

By Philip S. Moore

Opening of a Super Wal-Mart isn't normally a historic event “but it's a big deal for Benson,” said Mayor George Scott.

“We have been waiting for something like this for a long time,” he said. As the first national retailer to build in the 5,000-population town, the November opening represents the beginning of a new era for the Cochise County community. The store brings modern conveniences to the town's residents, and points the way to further gains ahead.

Now that Wal-Mart has opened, Scott said more retailers are on their way.

“There's a bank planning to build a new branch and Walgreens is talking about coming, too.” He said they need about 100 to 200 more homes to make it possible, “and we could get that in the next year.”

A new era for Benson is just one of the changes along the 64-mile “Golden Corridor,” from Benson to Red Rock. Fueled by Tucson's growth, residential and commercial development is transforming the rural landscape along I-10, east and west of the city.
